I think you're right about the cover - it doesn't say much of anything about the book. In fact, it looks a bit like a chicklit novel set in China or something, with that coy parasol going on in the corner.

I was totally absorbed in Red China Blues & finished Beijing Confidential almost as quickly as you did.  Was hoping to find Wong writing on the Olympics, but am coming up short. If you know any different, it'd be great to hear it.  Thanks for posting!

Ms Wong is an incredible writer. Having read Red China Blues, I'm now reading Beijing Confidential.
What I find most striking about her books is her ability to analyze events and document them in a coherent and often wryly humorous way.
