Yesterday when another, slightly less pregnant mother at Luke's gymnastics class remarked that I suddenly had a baby belly, I joked that I was thinking of painting it as an Easter egg for the upcoming holiday. I had no idea that painting one's belly is a Thing Pregnant Ladies Do but apparently, it is. There are kits. Those who engage in this practice this have formed a sort of splinter group off that Plaster Belly Cast contingent. (I've always thought of those women as the female equivalents of the men who gather to bang drums and howl in the woods.)
However, intrigued in spite of myself, I did a search for pregnant belly paintings on flickr. These two are my absolute favourites:
Very Frida Kahlo, don't you think? And very sophisticated, as these things go. The placement of that apple is pure artistic genius. The model is one Marigold Haske of the blog hot air.
If you decide to let you belly be painted, make sure they do not use so called "non-toxic" craft paints! These are not meant to be used on the skin, and will cause rashes and blisters. That non-toxic means you can eat it, and it won't kill you! Instead, use items meant for the skin, either face paints or make-up.
